My First Useful Sewing Project – DIY Fabric Bin

fabric bin with rope handlesAfter cutting out seemingly endless rectangular pieces (24 to be exact) of stylish home decor fabric, fusible interfacing and muslin lining, I was starting to think my idea of making my own fabric bins with grommets and rope handles was a very bad idea. However, now that it’s finished I am soooooo glad I persevered.

Bag interior

The interior is fully lined and ready to fill with my daughter’s clothes.

(check out my ridiculously not straight hem along the top. Disclaimer: I am a total sewing beginner).

To make this bin I used the fabric basket tutorial designed by StitchedbyCrystal for Makeit-Loveit. (Now there’s a mouthful!).

Having been through the process of making this bag, I think this tutorial is very good. However, I would probably do a few things differently next time around.  One change I suggest from the tutorial is to make your own pattern out of lightweight posterboard in the size you want (I just happened to have a piece laying around) and then cutting your fabric on the folded edge so that you don’t have to sew a seam across the middle of the bag as shown in the picture above. It will save you a little bit of time in cutting out all that fabric and one less seam to sew up. This is helpful particularly if you are making more than one bin. I made 4!

Also, I changed the design a bit to make my bin both wider and a little shorter than the bin in the tutorial because I wanted it to fit inside a specific piece of furniture. Figuring out the measurements for how to do this was not easy. I had to draw a lot of pictures because my math skills are so rusty. But in the end, I figured it out and got the dimensions I was looking for. If you alter the measurements, don’t forget to add seam allowance. Mine was 1/2 inch. I wouldn’t go much bigger than this (10x10x13) because the interfacing suggested (Pellon 809 Decor Bond) isn’t sturdy enough to keep the bag from being floppy in a larger size. Had I to do this over again, I would have chosen something a little bit more heavyweight, assuming it’s available.

I am so happy with how it turned out (crappy hemming job and all)! Now there’s no excuse for my husband NOT to put away the laundry. These bags are so roomy, he doesn’t even have to fold anything. Heck, maybe we’ll even be able to see the floor in my daughter’s room once in awhile (Well, maybe not. But here’s hoping).

I am really looking forward to all of the things I can make with my sewing machine to organize my house.

What do you think? Have you ever made any home decor/organization items with your sewing machine? Leave me a comment and tell me what you made.
